Chef George Reis

Ocean

George Reis was born in the Midwest and raised in upstate New York, which gave him an appreciation of the greatness of farm fresh foods and the blending of world flavors. After living in New York, Dallas, the Gulf Coast and Atlanta, George realized his dream when he moved to Birmingham and opened Ocean in March of 2002.

At Ocean George draws upon the flavors of the world and combines them with the freshest seafood.  Ocean has won several awards including the AAA Four Diamond Award for 2007 through 2015 and the Wine Spectator Award for 2004 through 2015.

In June of 2006, George opened his second restaurant, 26. 26 opened to the “Birmingham’s Best New Restaurant” by the Birmingham News and won the Wine Spectator Award 2009 through 2014. In 2015 George closed 26, redesigned the restaurant and reopened it as 5 Point Public House Oyster Bar, a casual beer centric, chef driven menu oyster house, if that isn’t saying a mouthful!

George has been an active board member of the Birmingham Originals. He also sits on the boards of Urban Food Project REV Birmingham and Leadership 5 Points. He is also active in numerous charities.

Most recently George won the Inaugural Alabama Seafood Cook-Off and is representing Alabama at the Great American Seafood Cook-Off in New Orleans.

With over 30 years of food and beverage experience George is fortunate to work in a job that he loves and enjoys every day.
